Sushi Heng, Subang Jaya, Malaysia

I feel as though I've hit the food jackpot with this week's find! Sushi Heng in Subang Jaya has to be at the top of this year's Yum List discoveries. Located very humbly in the enormous Asia Cafe food court, you would never guess that an internationally acclaimed chef was simmering in the kitchen waiting to give you the most sensational sushi experience of your life. I know I sound like a kid on a sugar high - that's what I feel like! Chef Heng has worked, trained and been stolen from one restaurant to another around the globe in 5 star hotels such as the Hilton and the Sheraton. With locations such as Las Vegas Hilton up his sleeve he has to be on top of his game. Why he is located in such an unassuming setting now remains a mystery to me but I'm soooo happy that he has decided to share his talent with the masses.

If you just saw photos of the food alone, you would think that you were looking at dishes from an expensive 5 star hotel. It is an almost surreal experience, dining on such exquisite pieces, but surrounded by the hustle, bustle and smells of an outdoor food court. Chef Heng explained the design process he goes through to create such delightful compositions. While Chinese himself, but with his essential sushi training in Japan, in true Nippon style he plans every detail of each sushi masterpiece before constructing it. Drawing minute details, considering flavours, textures, shapes, colour and balance, the work of sushi making is approached with the passion of an artist.

On our first culinary adventure with Chef Heng we gave him a budget and asked him to serve us whatever he pleased. Pictured above you'll see a variety of sushi and sashimi plates. The butterfish sashimi was so fresh and, well, buttery that it will be on my order every time I return. And, I was so impressed with the strawberry, avocado & mixed seafood artwork that I couldn't help but including two photos of that one dish. We finished with a surprise radish wrapped piece that was refreshing and a perfect end to an artful meal.

Chef Heng also does catering for functions. He can bring his whole tool kit to your event and work his magic on site. Most dishes on his menu range from 10 - 40RM.  With incredible food and unbeatable prices, Sushi Heng is my pick for the best of The Yum List for 2011.

Edo Ichi, Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Gyu Suji Omelette

Yaki Gyouza
Yaki Soba
Tofu Steak
Not to my taste, but something I haven't seen before - tempura batter bits served as a snack.

My Japanese cuisine repertoire is somewhat limited to sushi, sashimi, soba, curry, shabu shabu, teppanyaki and teriyaki. And even with those dishes I can't proclaim to have profound knowledge. With this humbling fact in mind, I usually rely on my lovely Japanese buddy to order and explain what's being eaten. But... with her not around, hubby and I were left to fend for ourselves at Edo Ichi in Solaris Dutamas. While wanting to branch out a little from our usual order, but being positively clueless, we chose randomly. I guess we were in luck this evening (or very hungry) as everything seemed to be uber good. Japanese tofu, yaki soba, gyu suji omelette and yaki gyouza were more than enough to fill our tummies and satisfy our taste buds. A total bill of 62RM seems to be reasonably priced Japanese food to me. The place was full when we dined, but the service fast. A large fish tank dividing the dining area made for more intimate spaces and you can't go wrong with an open sushi bar where you can see it all being made fresh to order. This was our first visit, but I would definitely go back again.

Sushi Train, Gold Coast, Australia

When my sister recommended the Sushi Train on my recent visit to the Gold Coast I wasn't so sure what to expect. Having worked in Asia for so many years often means that attempts at Asian food in Australia have a hard time living up to my expectations. Of course I trust my sister, but her opinion was further confirmed when we arrived to Sushi Train for a mid-week bite and there was a line up not only to dine in but for takeaway too. This place is located in an industrial estate, not a pedestrian mall or walking street - people actually come out of their way to get here.  I humbly took our number and waited for a spot to open up.  Fortunately a space was made available for us within 10 minutes.  As you can imagine plates of sushi and other dishes such as edamame whirl around the train in front of you.  Serves start at $3.50 and top at $8.00 - you can tell how much each costs by the colour of the plate.  We never had to wait for anything and the conveyer belt was constantly topped up by the skilled sushi chefs who were making it all right in front of us.  You can also request something special from the menu and the chefs will be happy to oblige. All in all I was pleasantly surprised by the freshness and quality of our meal.

Fukuya, Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

After struggling with a string of unsatisfying eating experiences in KL I'm delighted to say that over the last few weeks I have stumbled across quite a lot of yummy places... yummy enough to make it to The Yum List. This one, Fukuya, serves traditional Japanese cuisine. The quality ingredients are fresh and arranged perfectly with not even a drop of seasoning out of place. The ambience is spacious, green and peaceful. Our wait staff were friendly, courteous and efficient. While not cheap, you can still sample some of their excellent dishes for a reasonable price if you go for lunch. A number of different lunch sets are available ranging from 38 to 75 RM. I sampled various grilled fish dishes and my friend had the tempura and salmon sashimi. I have it from a very reliable Japanese source that the Traditional Japanese Full Course Set Lunch for 60RM is worth every cent. I will be going back on an empty stomach to sample that one.
