IR 1968, Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

IR 1968 brings to KL upscale Indonesian food with a hint of Hong Kong influence.   Friendly and informative service combined with pleasant indoor and outdoor seating options makes for a fine retreat from the Ampang noise and chaos.  The menu appears rather pricey for Indonesian cuisine but the quality comes close to meriting the cost.  Ox tongue steaks are their speciality - super tender tongue in a sweet and lightly tangy sauce.  Not something I'd usually order but we were convinced by the manager that this is THE meal to try on the menu.  Apparently the Hong Kong outlet got their Michelin Star this year for this dish in particular.  Other items are tasty too and food presentation is pretty and inviting.

Weissbrau German Bistro & Bar, Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Weissbrau German Bistro & Bar in Pavilion KL is a great place to enjoy a cold beer.  They have  a number of German beers on tap such as Erdinger, Hoegaarden and Leffe Blonde.  Each beer is accorded its own special glass, served at just the right temperature and poured with a perfect one inch head.  A range of imported bottled beers including Paulaner, Konid Ludwig and Grolsch are also available.  Not only is the beer of good quality and presentation so is the wine.  The range of house wines is surprisingly pleasant compared to the all too common unpalatable offerings in KL.  Being an open style location at street level, Weissbrau is perfect for KL's weather - providing protection from rain but open enough to savour the tropical climate and people watch.  Mad Sally, (pictured above) a newly formed Malaysian band happened to be playing the night we were there.  This energetic crew with toe tapping tunes made the perfect accompaniment to the lively atmosphere at Weissbrau.

Latin American Festival

Disappointed that you couldn't get a reservation to the 'sold out' grande finale of the Venezuelan gastronomic festival?  Well, you should be... it was a sensory treat!  But, don't worry your cravings for authentic Latin American fare can soon again be satisfied at the upcoming Latin American Festival.  Stalls from Argentina to Venezuela will be selling food, drinks and handicrafts from their respective countries.  I already have my shopping list: arepas from Venezuela, arequipe & alfajores from Argentina, empanadas from Colombia, brigadeiros from Brazil... mmm... dancing with the handsome MC... :-)
Details below:
On the upcoming Sunday,  May 22nd , music, food, dances, handicraft and the magic from Latin America will be displayed for the third time in Malaysia. This Festival will take place in "bbpark", Jalan Bukit Bintang, from 11 A.M. to 6 P.M. The proceeds of the event will go to relieve victims of the Haitian earthquake of  2010, through UNICEF.

'F' by Buffalo Kitchens, Bangsar, Malaysia

Come for coffee!  'F' by Buffalo Kitchens really know what they're doing when it comes to making a great cup. They use a winning blend of beans from Taiwan's top barista and the crema is perfect.  It is well worth the visit for a regular latte, cappuccino etc but what is more then worth trekking across town for is a creative coffee - single or double shots of espresso mixed with fruit juice.  It doesn't sound appetizing but... I tried the blend of espresso, watermelon juice, cream and orange zest and it's an unexpected delight for your taste buds.  I can't wait to go back to try the orange and strawberry blends too.  If you behave like a true Italian and stand at the bar for your caffeine fix your coffee will be half price. Chic setting, knowledge service, amazing coffee!

Venzuelan Food at Samplings, Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur

Que rico!!! Don't miss out on this chance to sample some delicious Venezuelan cuisine.  Guest chef Carmen Rawstron, of the recently published book My Venezuelan Cuisine, is only at Samplings, Berjaya Times Square until Sunday May 8th.  You can order a la carte or savour a set meal.  Dinner sets range from 98 - 168RM.  The lunch menu is a little cheaper.  The event not to miss will be the buffet brunch from 11am - 3pm, Sunday May 8th for only 55RM per person.  This is a bargain for the quality of the food served and the chance to listen to some live Latin music too.  Everything is delish, but for a true Venezuelan experience you must try the Empanaditas - deep fried bites of yum (corn based dough filled with black beans) and the Pabellon Criollo - traditional Venezuelan meal eaten anytime of the day with rice, black beans, shredded beef and sweet fried plantains.  For dessert go for the Torta Llorona (Crying Cake as it oozes warm chocolate sauce when opened) and the Bienmesabe (the name in Spanish says it all - I Taste Good!) And... for those of you in the know... they even have Diplomatico!  This fine, smooth, sweet rum is the only way to begin, accompany or end a perfect Venezuelan evening.
